3. Diagnostic Test
Short pre-assessments to identify each student’s strengths, gaps, and optimal placement level.

Purpose
At Mahomet Math, every student begins with a Diagnostic and Placement Test before enrollment. This assessment helps us understand each learner’s current skill level, strengths, and areas that need reinforcement. It ensures that every student is placed in a small group that matches their readiness, pace, and goals—creating the foundation for steady and confident progress.
What the Test Measures
The Diagnostic and Placement Test is not about passing or failing—it’s about understanding where your child is and where to begin. It evaluates:
• Core arithmetic and algebraic reasoning skills
• Conceptual understanding across key math strands
• Problem-solving strategies and flexibility
• Comfort with multi-step reasoning and word problems
• Readiness for collaborative small-group learning
Format and Duration
The test typically takes 45–60 minutes and includes both written and oral components. Students may be asked to explain their reasoning, demonstrate mental math strategies, or solve problems that reveal conceptual understanding rather than rote memorization.
Younger students receive age-appropriate, visual, and story-based problems designed to assess comprehension gently and supportively.
Results and Placement
Parents receive a brief summary of results, including insights into the student’s strengths and learning needs. Based on these results, we recommend an appropriate group placement or instructional pathway.
If necessary, students may be regrouped after initial sessions to ensure the best alignment between skill level and instructional challenge.
Fees and Scheduling
The Diagnostic and Placement Test is a one-time assessment and billed separately from regular tuition. After submitting your interest form or contacting us, our team will schedule the test and provide details about what to expect.
At Mahomet Math, placement is not a barrier—it’s a bridge. We believe every student can succeed when learning starts from the right place. This assessment helps us meet each child where they are and guide them, step by step, toward long-term confidence and mathematical fluency.
