Our Story

Mahomet Math began with a simple idea: math success comes from consistent practice, clear teaching, and personal connection. As parents and educators in the Mahomet community, we saw too many students struggling—not because they couldn’t do math, but because they lacked confidence and steady guidance.

Institutional tutoring centers are often expensive and profit-driven. They package sessions, move students through rigid programs, and leave many children to struggle on their own. We knew there had to be a better way.

Many factors can make students anxious about math—fast-paced classrooms, limited individual attention, or gaps in foundational understanding. We wanted to change that.

So we created something different: a small-group learning program where students receive focused attention, structured lessons, and steady encouragement to grow at their own pace. We do not replace school instruction and have neither the capacity nor the intention to do so. Instead, we serve as a supplementary enrichment program that reinforces school learning and builds long-term mathematical fluency.

What started as a few local families meeting around a kitchen table has grown into a community-based program serving students from upper elementary through high school. We’ve seen firsthand how the right mix of clarity, consistency, and confidence can turn math from a source of stress into a source of strength.

Today, Mahomet Math remains dedicated to one goal: helping students build the skills, confidence, and discipline that last long beyond the classroom. Mahomet Math is not a registered trademark and not a profit-making business institution. We are part of the Mahomet community—sharing our experience and passion as research scientists with backgrounds in mathematics, statistics, machine learning, and computer programming.

Meet the Founder

Mahomet Math was founded by Dr. Anteneh Z. Abiy, a scientist, educator, and lifelong learner who believes that math success grows from practice, structure, and encouragement. Dr. Abiy holds a Ph.D. and two master’s degrees in scientific and engineering disciplines and has spent his career using mathematics, statistics, and computational modeling to solve real-world problems. As both a parent and a teacher, he understands how students can lose confidence when math feels abstract or rushed. Mahomet Math was born from his desire to make learning math clearer, more structured, and more personal—helping students build confidence step by step. Through Mahomet Math, Dr. Abiy shares his experience as a researcher and educator to help children develop the habits, skills, and mindset that make math a lifelong strength.
